Dr Madeleine Gustavsson is a research fellow whose research focuses on fishing families and communities – particularly concentrating on the small-scale fishing sector.

Madeleine holds an ESRC New Investigator research grant titled: “Exploring the changing role(s), identities and wellbeing of women in small-scale fishing families” and she will be studying women’s participation in sustaining small-scale fishing families for the future. The study focuses on both UK and Canada and is due to finish at the end of 2020.

Before joining the European Centre in May 2018, Madeleine held positions as a postdoctoral research fellow in Teagasc (Ireland) working on a project on demonstration farms called AgriDemo-F2F, and a postdoctoral position at the ECEHH exploring the varying economics of marine spatial planning across geographical scale using Q methodology.

Madeleine completed her PhD at the University of Liverpool titled: “Examining the socio-cultural contexts of fishing lives on the Llŷn Peninsula, UK”. The thesis was drawing on qualitative interviews with fishing families in North Wales and explored themes of the lifecourse, gender identities and fishing practices as well as the cultural sustainability of local fishing policies.

Several international publications have emerged from this doctoral research.
